Roland Garros 2009 - French Open Tennis Tournament

This can be considered a truly historic moment in the history of tennis. Roger Federer played fabulously today and won the only Grand Slam title he was missing from his incredible career, the French Open, after beating Robin Soderling in the final in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(1), 6-4.

This is the only Grand Slam title the Swiss player was missing, and by winning this, he equals Pete Sampras' record of 14 grand slam titles won throughout the career.

Federer started the game very determined. The fact that Soderling had eliminated Nadal in his way to the final made Federer weary of the Swedish player's abilities. The first set was won quickly, 6-1. Soderling was simply overwhelmed by Federer's rhythm and better vision.

The second set was evenly matched, but during the tie break Federer was unstoppable. In the 3rd set, he quickly broke Robin's serve and went ahead to win 6-4, even though strong emotions were felt during his match point.

Soderling had an incredible speech, saying that Federer taught him a tennis lesson and that for him, Roger is the greatest player in history. Andre Agassi was the one who handed Federer the trophy.

Roger Federer joins a very select group of tennis players who managed to win all the 4 Grand Slams. These players are Don Budge, Fred Perry, Rod Laver, Andre Agassi and Roy Emerson.

Svetlana Kuznetsova won the women's singles title at Roland Garros after beating her fellow Russian player Dinara Safina in the final, score 6-4, 6-2.

Dinara Safina, the tournament's number 1 favorite is at her second consecutive lost Roland Garros final, after being beaten by Ana Ivanovic in 2008.

On the other end, Kuznetsova (favorite number 7) revenged the last year's defeat in the semifinals by the same Dinara Safina. At 23, this is her second grand slam title in her career, after winning the US Open in 2004. She also lost other two grand slam finals, at Roland Garros in 2006 and at the US Open in 2007. Each time she was beaten by Justine Henin.
